Masons Arms completed the 2004-05 season on a high with a 2-1 win over Binchester Social Club in the League Cup Final – the league’s final game of the campaign.
After a tight first 45 minutes which brought no goals, Masons were left reeling after squandering three guilt-edge chances to take the lead.
Tom Fothergill eventually broke the deadlock for Masons with a 20-yard set-piece on the hour mark. And they appeared to be heading towards a narrow, 1-0 victory until Lee Furber grabbed a dramatic equaliser with ten minutes left after a mix-up in the Masons defence.
However, Steven Fothergill edged them in front again with a neat diving header with just five minutes left on the clock.
And that was enough to seal another final win and their second piece of silverware just nine days after lifting the Paul Stevens Memorial Cup.
In contrast, it was Binchester’s second cup final defeat of the season after winning the Second Division title.
