League official calls it a day

A LEAGUE official has called time on his duties with the league after more than six years on the Committee.
Martin Walker

Martin Walker, who acted principally as the league’s press officer during his time, has stepped down from the committee to concentrate on work and personal commitments.

Walker joined the league half-way through the 2000-01 season as publicity officer and began writing reports for the league in the Local Heroes.

It was the first time the league had publicised detailed match reports in the Echo.

Walker was also instrumental in the introduction and launch of the league’s official website – spenny-league.co.uk – while he has also updated and developed the rapidly-improving site over the years, as well as designing page-header graphics and advertising logos.

And as well as several other jobs he carried out over the years – including Christmas prize draws and a hugely-successful sportsman’s dinner earlier this year – Walker had held the positions of chairman and registration secretary in separate spells.

He has also been responsible for the design and print of all league publications, mainly the annual handbook.

Walker has now decided to step down to concentrate on an increasing workload.

He said: “I'd like to think that I've done my fair share over the years as the league's PR has developed and progressed hugely in the last few years – particularly since the launch of the website four years ago, which has also developed massively.

“The Committee has been a credit to the league over the last three-to-four years and I’d like to think we have served members consistently with distinction.

“Of course, I know Mike Hill and Gary Livett will continue to take the league forward and continue its development with the help of people that will, hopefully, come to replace me on the Committee.

“Thanks to this league, I’ve not only enjoyed more than six years being involved in the administrative side of grass-roots football, which has in the past been thoroughly enjoyable, but I’ve also created several friendships from both the Committee and clubs within the league.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has been involved in the league over the years – particularly Mike and Gary – but also all secretaries and other club officials who have helped me in the role.

“I’d like to wish the league all the very best going forward. I know it’s in the best shape it has ever been and I’m sure the Committee will continue the excellent work of recent years and build on what has already been achieved.”

League Secretary Mike Hill added: "Martin has been an excellent servant to this league and will be greatly missed by everyone, not least by myself and Gary on a personal level, he has done a fantastic job achieving publicity for us which is second to none in the area.

“He will be a very hard act to follow and we would like to thank him for the time, effort and dedication he has shown this league over the past few years."
