Legend Smith to celebrate league landmark
LIVERPOOL living legend Tommy Smith will help the league celebrate its anniversary with a special Sportsman’s Dinner next year.
The Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League is celebrating its 20th anniversary this season.
And to mark the occasion – we’re holding a prestigious Sportsman’s Dinner at Spennymoor Town Hall in January, with Smith and renowned dinner circuit speaker Steve Kindon forming just some of the entertainment.
“It promises to be a cracking night,” said league press officer Martin Walker. “We have two of the best after-dinner speakers around, a three-course meal, all the usual sporting dinner games and an auction of sporting memorabilia.
“What is unique about this sportsman’s dinner, though, is that we aren’t actually organising it to raise funds. The tickets are being offered at a discounted rate to member clubs, and any surplus that may be made on the night will go directly back to our clubs at the end of the season.
“This event is about celebrating 20 years of local Sunday morning football in the Spennymoor Sunday League.”
Smith enjoyed a glittering career with Liverpool during a golden age at Anfield, winning a string of trophies including the league championship, the FA Cup, the European Cup and the European Cup Winners’ Cup. He played a total of 637 games between 1960 and 1978. Kindon, meanwhile, a former Wolves player, was named Sports Speaker of the Year in 2004-05.
The Sportsman’s Dinner is being held at Spennymoor Town Hall on Friday 26th January 2007. Tickets are priced £25 (£250 for a table of ten, or £200 to member clubs).
The league needs to know from clubs by the end of October their ticket requirements for the night – Secretaries should contact Treasurer Gary Livett (number in the handbook) to book.
Any remaining tickets after October 31 will be sold externally, subject to availability.
