Brancepeth upset mighty Masons
League Cup Round Two

DIVISION Two side New Brancepeth pulled off the shock of the season so far when they knocked league leaders Masons Arms out of the League Cup.

Masons are currently top of Division One having won all their 10 league games so far as well as two games in the J&A Trophy and their League Cup first round tie.

But they came a cropper against New Brancepeth, currently second in Division Two, in the second round of the J&A Trophy.

Masons took a first half lead through Liam McRoy, but Clarke Charlton drew Brancepeth level before half-time.

And late on in the second half, Masons could have won the game when they were awarded a penalty, only for Brancepeth goalkeeper Charlie Brooks to save the spot kick.

And Sean Davis went on to grab the winning goal with five minutes left to book his side a quarter-final tie with Croxdale.

“It was a tremendous effort by the lads and they thoroughly deserved it,” said their Secretary Brian Stewart. “It was a cracking game and they could have won it had it not been for the heroics of Charlie, but we did well. Maybe they were expecting an easy game, but they got a rude awakening.”

Meanwhile, Hunwick Joiners scraped through to the quarter-finals on penalties after drawing 2-2 with Victoria after extra-time.

James Melville and Peter Lonsdale scored Hunwick’s goals, while Michael Marsden scored both for Victoria, with Hunwick winning the shoot-out 2-1.

They now play North Briton in the quarters, which are due to be played on Sunday February. The quarters in full are: Shildon Fox v Old Shildon, Croxdale v New Brancepeth, North Briton v Hunwick and Castle v Tudhoe Utd.
