A POSSIBLE title deciding game will be held this Sunday when Old Shildon take on Loves.
Weather permitting, the two top favourites for the league championship will do battle in a game that could suggest who’ll lift the title come May.
Old Shildon dropped two points in their last game, and while they had no game last week, Loves capitalised with a 3-0 home win over Salvins.
Three first half goals by Gary Hindmarsh, Steven Hancock and Jay Wilson ensured the victory.
“It was fairly comfortable,” said Secretary Keith Flowers. “But strong wind in the second half made it difficult for both sides and there wasn’t much in it. But we’re looking forward to Sunday now – probably our biggest game of the season up to now.”
Elsewhere in Division One, Mark Pattinson scored a hat-trick to give Beehive a 4-3 win over Green Tree. Kenny Melvin was also on target, with Andrew Walton, Dave Longstaff and Darren Dye scoring for the Tree.
Newton Aycliffe beat Binchester Social Club 2-1 thanks to a brace by striker Johnny Craig.
Billy McLacklin scored twice for Tudhoe United as they drew 2-2 with Postchaise, whose scorers were Lee Taylor and Paul Thompson.
In Division Two last week, Grand continued their impressive form with a 4-3 win at Victoria, Mark Cowley scoring all the goals!
Shildon Athletic won 1-0 at Belvedere, Chris Ross netting the crucial goal, while Voltigeur won 2-1 at Masons Arms with goals by Mark Astwell and Craig Warburton.
Cumby Arms beat Middlestone Moor 1-0 thanks to a Jonathan Hall strike.
North Briton beat Boot & Shoe 3-1 at home with goals by Adrian Gough, Kevin O’Neil and Dominic Rich.
Finally, Masons United progressed to the semi-finals of the Division Two with a shock, 3-0 win over promotion-chasing Hunwick Joiners.
Paul Gibson, Gavin Alderson and Chris Larkman were the goal heroes to book their place in the last four.
• The league would inform club secretaries that the next league meeting will now take place on Wednesday January 14 – a week later than planned – at a venue to be decided, due to the recent fire that hit Brewery Field.
• The league would also like to wish all of its members a Happy New Year. Keep up the good work in 2004, and good luck for the rest of the season.
