 OLD SHILDON POWER ON
Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League
OLD SHILDON continued their rich vein of form with a thumping win to boost their title hopes.
The normally strong Shildon side began the season slowly and struggled to put a string of results together after losing two key players in the summer.
But they have bounced back of late, and confirmed that with an 11-2 win over Browney last Sunday.
Craig Bendilow (2), Paul Wilson (2), Paul Whensley (2), John Poluter, Anthony Moss, Anthony Brass, Martin Hedley and Louis Whensley were all on the scoresheet.
And Old Shildon’s Dave Hedley said: “It was a great performance by the lads and we are starting to play some good football now. We had to bring in some younger players to replace the lads that left in the summer and it’s starting to pay off now. We’re still third in the league and up there for the title so we can’t complain.”
Elsewhere in Division One last week, second-placed Thorns won 4-0 at Horndale with goals by Steven Richardson (2) and Anthony Stewart (2), while Hunwick Joiners were 4-1 winners over Salvins thanks to goals by Stephen Howe (2), Darren Wilson and Sean Nicholson.
Masons Arms won 5-1 at home to Voltigeur with goals by Kevin Sweeney (2), Justin Fox, Peter Kerr and Gavin Greenwood, while Tudhoe United beat the Grand 7-1.
The match between Lakeside and Postchaise was postponed.
In Division Two, the top two continued their promotion push with victories.
Top-of-the-table Croxdale maintained their superb form with a 4-0 win over sixth-placed Victoria.
Nat Quinn scored two, with James Richardson and Gavin Bell getting the others, and Croxdale right-back Kelvin McIntosh said: “We played very well and it was a great all-round performance. We’ve been playing well recently but that was one of our best performances of the season. It’s got to be our aim to win the league, but promotion is priority and it’s good to be involved at the top, so hopefully we can just keep it going.”
Second placed Binchester Social Club won 4-1 at Shildon Athletic thanks to goals by Lee Furber (2), Chris Pickles and John Wheatley.
Secretary Steve Sutton said: “It was a good result for us. It was honestly a game of two halves. We were cruising 3-0 at half-time, but they battled back in the second half and penned us back a bit, without creating too many chances, but we were pleased to come through with the win.”
Elsewhere, Belvedere beat Atlantic Bar 7-2 thanks to goals by Lee Nixon (2), John-Paul Greaves (2), Adrian Brown, Tim Hutchinson and Karl Thompson.
Green Tree and Masons United played out a 3-3 draw, while North Briton won 3-1 at Gainford.
Finally, Ash Tree progressed to the second round of the Division Two Cup with a 3-0 win over Cumby Arms. Neil Foster, Richard Turner and Glyn Porter scored the goals.
• Clubs are reminded that they must pay for their allocation of raffle tickets for the Christmas Prize Draw at the next meeting.
The next league meeting will take place at the North Briton, Aycliffe Village, Newton Aycliffe, on Wednesday December 8th December 2004, from 8pm.
