LEAGUE TITLES ARE CLINCHED
Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League
BOTH league titles for 2004-05 were clinched last week as Thorns won the Division One title for the second successive season.
Binchester Social Club, meanwhile, were crowned Division Two champions with a game to spare after their 3-0 win over rivals Eldon Arms last Sunday.
Thorns clinched the top-flight championship when nearest rivals Hunwick Joiners dramatically failed to draw their final, crucial game of the season.
Hunwick needed just a point from the Division One’s final league match of the campaign last Sunday when they traveled to Masons Arms.
And Masons did Thorns an almighty favour by beating the challengers 1-0 – with last year’s champions running out title-winners again on goal difference.
Binchester’s, and indeed the whole league’s final league fixture, is their home tie at home to Ash Tree on Tuesday May 3.
Meanwhile, congratulations to Old Shildon, who beat Elm Road of the Wear Valley League 3-2 in the Darryl Stobbs Memorial Trophy Final last Friday.
The league has appointed their referees for their five finals this season.
They are as follows:
Kelvin McIntosh Division Two Cup – referee Stephen Robinson; assistants Stephen Hopper and Billy James.
Division One Cup – referee Alan Robson, assistants Andrew Lowther and Stephen Clough.
B&A Trophy Final – referee Tommy Johnson; assistants Chris Ellis and Mick Henderson.
League Cup Final – referee Stephen Cant; assistants Stephen Clough and Jeff Chapman.
Paul Stevens Cup – referee Kevan Hall, assistants: Tommy Lye and Micky Grimes.
• Four of the league’s cup finals will now be played at Coxhoe Athletic’s football ground in Coxhoe in late April to May.
The Kelvin McIntosh Division Two Cup Final between Binchester Social Club and Victoria will be played on Friday 29th April, with a 6.30pm kick-off.
The Division One Cup between Thorns and Hunwick Joiners will go ahead on Sunday 1st May, kicking off at 10.30am.
The B&A Trophy Final between Thorns and Hunwick will take place on Sunday 8th May (10.30am) and the last cup – the League Cup Final between Binchester Social Club and Masons Arms or Hunwick Joiners – will kick-off at 10.30am on Sunday 15th May.
Meanwhile, the Paul Stevens Memorial Cup will be played at Moor Lane, Newton Aycliffe, on Friday 6th May.
• The league’s next league meeting will be held on Wednesday 4th May at Hogan’s in Bishop Auckland.
• The league’s end-of-season presentation night will be held at Old Shildon WMC on Friday 27th May, 2005. Trophy-awarding will be followed by singing group Koncept, and clubs will be required to purchase tickets.
