Goals galore as rain ruins fixtures again

THERE were goals galore as heavy rain put paid to the league’s fixture programme again.

Only six games were played as another six were postponed due to waterlogged pitches.

But Croxdale and Green Tree took advantage of their games getting the go-ahead as they netted no less than 31 goals between them!

Division Two leaders and champions-elect Croxdale hammered North Briton 17-1 in the quarter-finals of the League Cup to set-up a semi-final tie with either Belvedere or Thorns.

It’s the second time they have won by the same scoreline after beating Atlantic Bar 17-1 in the league earlier in the season.

Striker Iain Ambrosini netted seven, while there was also a hat-trick by Gavin Bell, two goals from Kevin Hepburn and Andrew Stewart and one each from Brent Mailer, Ben Roffe and Matt Quinn.

“Everything we hit went in!” said manager Craig Fish. “To be honest we expected a much harder game and so we set up with that in mind and thought they would give us a good test.

“But we went at them from the start and before we knew it we were four, five goals up. Once it was 7-0 at half-time they were already shot and we took advantage in the second half.” Gary Donald netted the Brit’s consolation.

Green Tree’s thumping win was a 14-0 league victory over struggling George and Dragon.

Gavin McIntyre (4), Matthew Carrick (4), David Longstaff (2), Lee Walton, Andrew Carrick, Andrew Appleton and Martin Hutchinson all chipped in.

Manager Chris Lowe said: “They only had the bare 11 players and didn’t really get out of their own half. They were struggling and we played well so it was a bad game for them, but we’d take that every week.”

Elsewhere in Division Two, Belvedere jumped three places to seventh with a 4-2 win at Masons United thanks to goals by Lee Nixon (3) and Jonathan Millward. Mark Owen and David Bush scored for Masons.

Shildon Athletic and Ash Tree drew 2-2. Richard Thompson and Wayne Stout scored for Shildon, with Mark Surtees netting both Ash Tree goals.

New Brancepeth won 6-1 at Half Moon with goals by Eddie Watson (2), Paul Littlewood, Chris Jones, Karl Wilkinson and Michael Gibbons. Paul Bayles scored for Half Moon.

In Division One, only one game made it with three postponements. Voltigeur beat Bay Horse 2-1 with goals by Gary Bestford and Gary Dixon, with Stuart Fawcett netting for the horse.

The following games were postponed: Penny Gill v Eldon Arms, Binchester SC v Tudhoe Utd, Hogans v Hunwick.

The two B&A Trophy quarter-final ties (Old Shildon v Quinns and Lakeside v Victoria) were also postponed, along with the League Cup round two clash between Southerne Club and Masons Arms.

• The league have now confirmed that the end-of-season presentation night will take place on Friday 9th June at Old Shildon WMC, with entertainment by local band the Zoo, tickets priced £3.

• The next league meeting will take place at Belvedere WMC on Wednesday 12th April from 8pm.
