Croxdale goal haul sets up quarter tie Division One Cup round-up
CROXDALE produced a commanding performance to win their Division One Cup first round clash at Voltigeur.
And they will go on to meet Old Shildon, who beat Tudhoe United in the first stage, in the quarter-finals of the competition after hammering the Volti 9-2.
Andy Stewart (2), Gavin Bell (2), Karl Lamb (2), Craig Flowers (2) and Dean Burns were all on the scoresheet for Croxdale.
Their manager Craig Fish said: “We were three up after 20 minutes and 5-1 up by half-time so it was fairly routine. But it was a good game of football – probably more enjoyable for us than them – but it was played in the right spirit, and credit to them.
“Our aim now would be just to go as far as we possibly can in the competition. It would be nice to go all the way, but we’re just taking each game as it comes.” Mark Priestly and Stephen Bingham scored for the Volit.
Old Shildon won 5-0 at Tudhoe in the same round with goals by Michael Davison (3), Chris Strong and Craig Hutchinson.
The only outstanding first round game Binchester Social Club Hunwick Joiners, the winners of which will play North Briton away in the second round.
Meanwhile, Thorns booked a semi-final tie with either Masons Arms or Quinns when they won 6-2 at Middridge Bay Horse in the second round of the competition.
Shaun Longthorne (2), Steven Richardson (2), Danny Lee and Andrew Richardson scored the goals. David Tedder scored both goals for the Bay Horse.
The other semi will consist of North Briton/Binchester/Hunwick v Croxdale/Old Shildon.
