LAST DITCH LEVELLER IN TABLE-TOPPING CLASH
Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League
LEAGUE leaders Masons Arms snatched a last-minute equaliser in their top-of-the-table clash with and title-chasing Hunwick Joiners.
Paul Bailes put Hunwick ahead with a penalty mid-way through the first half as they dominated the opening 45 minutes.
But Masons fought back after the break and eventually deserved their late leveler Andy Warnett scoring the all-important goal – after turning the game upside down and dominating the second half.
“I think it was a fair result,” said Hunwick’s Shaun Nicholson. “It was quite an equal game. We had the better of the first half and they the second, but although we’re disappointed to have drawn, it was probably a fair result overall.”
Masons’ John Booth added: “I thought both sides played some good football in difficult conditions and it was a good game to watch. I thought we had chances to score in the second half so deserved to get one in the end, it was a good result for us.”
Elsewhere, second-placed Thorns continued their championship race with a comfortable 7-1 home win against the Grand, with goals by Craig Brown (2), Ian Woodall (2), Shaun Longthorne, Micheal Oliver and Antony Stewart.
Old Shildon, currently third, won 8-1 at Lakeside thanks to goals by Adam Pinkney (6), Anthony Moss and Barry Robertson. Marc De Lucia scored for the Lakeside.
Meanwhile, Postchaise claimed their first league win of the season with a 3-1 win over Tudhoe United – Kevin Strange, Daniel Pattinson and Lee Taylor scoring the goals.
Manager Peter Baker said: “For the first time this season we had virtually a full squad to pick from and it made a big difference. We controlled the game from start to finish and never looked like losing. They hammered us in the cup a couple of weeks ago and we were determined that wasn't going to happen again. Our work-rate and commitment showed throughout the game and we could have won by more.” Billy Mcclacklan scored for Tudhoe.
Elsewhere, Salvins won 5-1 at Voltigeur, while the match between Browney and Horndale was postponed.
In Division Two, there was no less than 26 goals in two games as Binchester Social Club strengthened their grip on the promotion race.
They beat Gainford 12-0 with goals by Chris Pickles (4), Lee Furber (4), Jeff Morrow (2), Anth Binks and John Wheatley, while Victoria beat Cumby Arms 13-1.
Elsewhere, Croxdale won 7-2 at Ash Tree with goals by Gavin Wood (3), Joseph Heywood (2), Matt Quinn and Ben Roffe. Glynn Porter and Steven Walton scored for Ash Tree.
Ross Brown and Chris Ross were on target for Shildon Athletic as they drew 2-2 with North Briton, Gary Donald and David Patrick getting their goals.
Atlantic Bar and Masons United played out a 5-5 draw, while the match between Eldon Arms and Belvedere was postponed
Finally, Green Tree were the only team left spearheading the Spennymoor Sunday League’s campaign in the Durham FA Sunday County Cup, but they unfortunately went down 10-2 at Stockton The Station.
• Clubs are reminded that they MUST take their allocation of raffle tickets for the Christmas Prize Draw at the next meeting.
The league’s prize draw, to be held in December, has always been its biggest fundraising event of the year, and all clubs’ continued support would be appreciated.
The next league meeting will take place at Old Shildon WMC in Shildon on Wednesday 3rd November, when all clubs must take a minimum allocation of £50-worth of tickets.
Clubs are more than welcome to take as many tickets as they like. As usual, clubs will take 50% of sales from the tickets.
