Village claim tense league decider
Division Three

AYCLIFFE VILLAGE clinched the Division Three title with a crunch deciding game on Tuesday night.

In what was a tense, exciting game – and after a goalless first-half – Aycliffe flew into a three-goal lead with an opener by Dave Fawcett then two well-taken goals by Marc Addy.

Shildon Fox, who only needed a draw to claim the league title, then scored two quick goals by Michael Roberts and Ian Maddison to set up a nail-biting final 15 minutes, but Aycliffe managed to hold out to seal the title.

Boss Steve Moran said: “It’s a shame that it had to go down to one game like that because both sides have been excellent all season, it’s been a credit to the league.

“There were five superb goals scored in the game and at 3-0 I thought it was wrapped up, but they gave us a scare towards the end, it was probably an excellent game to watch as a neutral but I didn’t really enjoy it until afterwards!”
