FROST HITS FIXTURE PROGRAMME
Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League
FIVE games were hit by the frost last week as frozen pitches put paid to the league’s fixture programme.
Five games were played, however, and Binchester Social Club booked a B&A Trophy second round tie with Tudhoe United after they beat Voltigeur 5-2.
Prolific striker Chris Pickles bagged a hat-trick, while John Wheatley and Lee Furber were also on target in the win.
But Secretary Steve Sutton admitted: “It wasn’t a great game and I think the three-goal difference probably flattered us. We had a lot of chances, but we didn’t play particularly well and I’m sure the Volti will be a disappointed with the result.”
Binchester play Tudhoe in the second round of the competition this Sunday, with the winners due to play Horndale in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, three other quarter-final games are due to be played this Sunday, with Shildon Athletic entertaining Old Shildon, Hunwick playing Salvins and Croxdale at home to title-chasing Thorns.
In the only Division One game last week, Salvins moved up two places in the table with a 2-2 draw at Tudhoe United.
Tudhoe were forced to field a make-shift strike force after injuries to regular front men Allan Barratt and divisional top scorer Billy McClacklan, who is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.
And they had to come from behind twice to earn a draw, with Michael Lee and Christian Schofield getting the goals.
Defender Tony Lennox said: “The two injuries have come at a bad time for us, especially Billy’s knee, and we’ve had to put a bit of a make-shift side out. But considering it wasn’t a bad performance and it’s a good point for us. Michael Lee normally plays in defence and we’ve pushed him up front, and he’s done a great job for us.”
The following games were postponed: Masons Arms v Horndale, Grand v Browney and Hunwick v Lakeside.
In Division Two, Shildon Athletic won 9-1 at struggling bottom-of-the-table side Gainford.
Jamie Scaife bagged four goals and there was one apiece from Ross Brown, Kevin Kavanagh, Paul Gargett, Richard Thompson and Adam Potter.
Green Tree beat North Briton 3-0 with goals by Darren Dye, Barry Liddle and Andrew Appleton, while Croxdale were 4-0 winners at home to Belvedere.
Two games were postponed. They were: Cumby Arms v Ash Tree and Eldon Arms v Masons United.
• The next league meeting will take place at Binchester Social Club, Bishop Auckland, on Wednesday 2nd February, 2005, from 8pm.
