LEAGUE ENJOY BOXING BREAK Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League THE Spennymoor Sunday League has given its teams the day off this Boxing Day! There will be no games this weekend due to the festive break, but fixtures re-start again in the New Year (Sunday January 2). The league would like to wish all its referees, clubs and players a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. It’s been yet another positive year for the league, under difficult circumstances, and the three-man Committee of Secretary Mike Hill, Registration Secretary Martin Walker and Treasurer Gary Livett is appreciative of everyone’s support. “It’s been another great year,” said Mike Hill. “The everyday running of the league has gone fairly smoothly, considering the restraints in terms of committee members, and other than the hard work of the committee, this is largely down to the work and co-operation of all club secretaries and our referees. “Our positive coverage in the local press has continued this year, while the development of our official website has been superb. “We would ask that everyone keeps up their good work and maintain the standards we have set in gaining the reputation as the best run Sunday league in the region. Our best wishes go to every club, player and referee connected with the league.” Meanwhile, Second Division side Binchester Social Club caused somewhat of a stir by knocking Old Shildon out of the League Cup (round two) last week. Michael Tinkler and Lee Furber scored Binny’s goals, and Secretary Steve Sutton said: “That was our best performance of the season. We’ve been playing well lately and we could have possibly scored even more goals late on, so I think we thoroughly deserved the win.” Outstanding round two matches in the League Cup are: Hunwick v North Briton, Green Tree v Croxdale, Eldon Arms v Masons Arms. Those already in the quarter-finals are: Shildon Athletic, Belvedere, Voltigeur, Tudhoe United and Binchester Social Club. In Division One last week, Masons Arms comfortably won 3-0 at Lakeside with goals by Kevin Dodds (2) and Peter Kerr. Salvins were 2-1 winners over Voltigeur, while the games between Thorns and Browney and Hunwick and Tudhoe United were postponed. In Division Two, Eldon Arms went second top with a 4-1 win over Belvedere, Andrew Sams (2), John Sweeney and Tony Iveson getting the goals. Secretary Dave Sayers said: “It was a comfortable victory and we are starting to play well together now. We’ve gone second and into a promotion place and hopefully we can keep it up.” Meanwhile, Croxdale won 5-2 at home to the North Briton with goals by Gavin Bell (3) and Steven Inglis (2). Green Tree won 6-0 at Gainford with goals by Darren Dye (3), Barry Liddle (2) and Gavin McIntyre. The games between Cumby Arms and Masons United and Ash Tree and Victoria were postponed. • The next league meeting will take place at Horndale WMC, Newton Aycliffe, on Wednesday 5th January, 2005, from 8pm.
