Ash Tree get second win of season Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League ASH TREE won their second game of the season to jump one place to 11th in Division Two with a 5-0 win over the Southern Club. Andrew Thompson, Glyn Porter and Andrew Poulton put them into a 3-0 half-time lead, while second-half goals by Simon Chapman and Lee Gobin completed the win. “It was a very good performance from us,” said Ash Tree Secretary Jeffrey Spooner. “We knew that we needed to start picking up points quickly, and as it turned out we could have scored a lot more than five, so we were happy with the performance and the result.” Victoria maintained their lead at the top of Division Two with a 3-2 win at Horndale Celtic. James Smith (2) and Gary Scott scored for the Vic, with Ronnie Parker and Graeme Carling getting Horndale’s goals. Croxdale jumped to second with a 7-3 win over the Green Tree thanks to goals by Andy Stewart (3), Brent Mailer (2), Ben Roffe and Iain Ambrosini. Belvedere were 12-1 winners over the North Briton with goals by Lee Nixon (3), Jonathan Millward (3), John-Paul Greaves (2), David Brown, Paul Gargett, Timmy Hutchinson and Andrew Trotter. Kevin O’Neill scored for the Brit. The game between Half Moon and New Brancepeth was postponed. In Division One last week, Masons Arms maintained their pressure on Thorns at the top of the league with a 4-0 win at Binchester Social Club. League-leaders and current champions Thorns edged a 3-2 win over Hogans to keep their noses in front at the top of the league. But Masons once again matched them with a comfortable win in Binchester last week - see Game of the Week feature. Top-of-the-table Thorns were 3-2 winners over Hogans with goals by Ian Woodhall (2) and Mark Nicholson. Michael Hudson and Sean Ingledew scored for Hogans.
Meanwhile, Tudhoe United were 5-1 winners at the Bay Horse thanks to goals by Billy McClacklan (4) and Paul Leadbitter. Dale Anderason scored for Bay Horse. Lakeside were 3-1 winners over Hunwick Joiners with goals by new signing Tony Stebbings on his debut and one from Dave Neale. Paul Taylor scored Hunwick’s goal. The game between Browney and Penny Gill and Voltigeur and Old Shildon were postponed. Finally, Quinns progressed to the quarter-finals of the Kelvin McIntosh Division Two Cup with a 3-0 win over Masons United with goals by John-Paul Tallentire, Steven Quinn and Craig Parker.
• All clubs will be given their annual quota of raffle tickets to sell for this year’s Christmas Prize Draw at the next league meeting in October. The league will again ask all clubs to sell a minimum of £50-worth of tickets, with the club taking a 50% commission of sales. But clubs will also be able to take additional tickets when they are dished out at the next meeting on Wednesday 5th October, which will be held at the Voltigeur in Spennymoor (from 8pm).
• The league plan to hold a Christmas Party this year, when the draw will be made, at a separate location to the December meeting, with tickets for sale and entertainment and food on the night. More details will be issued at a later date. |
