Vic promotion drive starts with win
Division Two round-up

PROMOTION-CHASING Victoria started their season with a 1-0 win at home to Shildon Athletic.

Victoria have finished third in Division Two for two consecutive seasons, and are hoping to finish in the top two this year and promotion to the top flight.

And they got that bandwagon off to the perfect start with three points against Shilson, who finished fifth last season.

Adam Cunningham scored the winning goal in what was a close game.

But Vic Secretary Marcus Jayne said: “We should have scored more goals. We hit the crossbar twice and the post. We had a lot of chances but just struggled to put them away, but it was good to start with a win. We’ve finished third two years running so the aim is to improve on that this season and win promotion.”

Meanwhile, Half Moon won 5-2 at Belvedere with goals by Paul Bayles (3), Steven Tulip and Paul Moses. Lee Nixon netted both Belvedere goals.

Penny Gill and Green Tree played out a 2-2 draw. Gary Summerson and Aaron Soulsby scored for Penny, with Darren Dye and Martin Hutchinson getting the Tree’s goals.

Hogans won 4-2 at Eldon Arms with goals by Paul Welsh (2), Dean Cummins and Matthew Parkin. Andy Sams and Karl Dargue scored for Eldon.

In Division Three, new side Shildon Fox and Hounds came from behind to eventually win 4-2 at fellow new club Castle - click here for more details and action pictures.

Elsewhere, Bishop Masons won 3-0 at home to the Navy Club with goals by Matthew Saunders, Simon Hodgson and Anthony Ellison.

Aycliffe Village won 9-2 at home to Southerne Club thanks to goals by Martin Walker (3), Marc Addy (2), Phil Judge (2), Gary Donald and an own goal.
