Plucky Celtic keep cup group alive Division Three Cup round-up
MUCH-IMPROVED Horndale Celtic kept their cup hopes alive with a convincing win over Masons United in Group B of the Division Three Cup.
Despite Masons going 1-0 up, Shaun Grant drew Horndale level before Paul Hughes made it 2-1 at halftime.
Second-half goals by Hughes, Graeme Carling and Guy Starling made sure of the win for Horndale and still with a chance of qualiftying for the semi-finals of the competition.
Boss Joe Haywood said: “That’s our aim. We’re definitely looking to progress. We’re maybe not strong enough to go through but we’re playing quite well now and we’ve signed a couple of new players and are starting to improve.”
Also in Group B, Aycliffe Village missed their chance to all-but qualify when they only managed a 2-2 draw at home to the Southerne Club.
Despite Michael Hannon putting Aycliffe 1-0 up, Scott Hudson netted two to put Southerne in the driving deat at half-time. Phil Judge netted the leveller with about 20 minutes left.
