REFEREES HONOUR TRAGIC PLAYER
Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League
All referees associated with the Spennymoor Sunday League have rallied together to support the memory of a tragic player within the league.
Official Simon Fell was so touched by the shocking news of 24-year-old Kelvin McIntosh’s death three weeks ago that he has issued a rallying call to his colleagues.
And all referees have agreed to donate their next match fees to a charity of Kelvin’s family’s choice.
Furthermore, the league is asking all clubs to donate one week’s worth of their raised cash into the pot. And the league will then match the total donated, pound-for-pound, to hopefully make a worthwhile donation.
“We were all saddened by the tragic death of Kelvin,” said League Secretary Mike Hill. “Simon Fell approached us and suggested this idea, which has been wholeheartedly backed by all officials and clubs alike. We can’t do much for the family, but we hope it will be a nice gesture and will hopefully enable Kelvin’s name to live on.”
The league is also re-naming the Division Two Cup after Kelvin.
The league will be asking for clubs’ weekly donation at the next league meeting, which is due to take place at Old Shildon WMC on Wednesday 2nd March, 2005, from 8pm.
Meanwhile, the league’s fixture programme was hit by the snow last week as only two games were played.
Tudhoe United became the first team to progress to the semi-finals of the League Cup with a 4-2 home win over Shildon Athletic in the quarters.
Michael Lee, Aaron McGarr, Christian Schofield and Allan Barrett were all on target in what was a close game.
Tudhoe defender Tony Lennox admitted: “It was backs to the walls in the second half. We dominated the first half, but they came out after half-time and really pressured us, bringing it back to 2-1 at one point. They also had chances to draw level, but we held out and grabbed another couple of goals, and I think we just had the edge over them. Overall it was a good win for us.”
The outstanding quarter-final ties are: Hunwick v Croxdale, Voltigeur v Binchester SC and Belvedere v Masons Arms.
In Division Two last week, North Briton jumped up a place with their seventh league win of the season – beating Atlantic Bar 7-3 at home.
• The next league meeting will take place at Old Shildon WMC on Wednesday 2nd March, 2005, from 8pm.
