IN-FORM THORNS GIVEN SCARE Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League IN-FORM Division One side Thorns were given a run for their money by Browney in the divisional cup last week. Browney raced into a 3-0 lead during their Division One Cup first round clash with the champions, Dale Phillips (2) and Peter Boucher grabbing the surprise goals. But Thorns kicked back and were level by half-time, then turned on the style after the break, bagging another six to eventually win 9-3. “We gave our all in the first 20 minutes,” said Browney manager Gerard Crooks. “But then we suffered an injury and we only had one sub and it went downhill from there. Fitness showed in the second half and they hammered us!” Shuan Longthorne (3), Anthony Stewart (2), Ian Woodhall (2), Andrew Richardson and Steven Richardson were all on target for Thorns. Meanwhile, Horndale also skipped into the second round of the Division Two Cup with a 9-1 win over Voltigeur. Dale Anderson scored a hat-trick, while there were also goals from Tony Stebbings (2), Paul Weatheridge, Kyle Allen, Stuart Fawcett and Ryan Stonehouse. Manager Adrian Musgrave said: “It was one of our best performances of the season. We’ve been playing well lately and we probably expected to win, but not as comfortably as that, so it was a good result.” Elsewhere, Hunwick won 9-2 at Lakeside with goals by James Melville (4), Glynn Donnelly (3), Paul Bailes and Ross Brown. Steve Hepples and Andy Clay were on target for Lakeside. In the first round of the Division Two Cup, Binchester Social Club beat Shildon Athletic 5-0 with goals by Lee Furber (3), Chris Pickles and Paul Foster. Victoria also progressed to the next round with a 5-1 win over Masons United. Jason Greenland (2), James Smith (2) and John Templeton scored for the Vic, with Steven Alderson getting United’s only goal. Croxdale and Eldon Arms played out a 2-2 draw after extra-time, with Croxdale winning 4-3 on penalties. In normal time, Chris Carling and James Richardson were on target for Croxdale, with David Leary and Andrew Sams finding the net for Eldon. Meanwhile, Salvins progressed to the second round of the B&A Trophy with a 3-2 home win over North Briton. In the only Division One fixture last week, Tudhoe United won 3-2 at Grand thanks to a hat-trick by Billy McClacklin. Michael Kay and Mark Cowley scored for the Grand. In Division Two, Ash Tree beat Gainford 5-0 with goals by Steven Bowen (2), Andrew Poulton, Richard Turner and Steven Walton, while Green Tree won 3-0 at Belvedere thanks to Darren Dye (2) and Paul Shaw. • Clubs are reminded that they MUST take their allocation of raffle tickets for the Christmas Prize Draw at the next meeting.
