Tudhoe shock champions Thorns
Division One round-up

TUDHOE UNITED grabbed a late winner to shock rivals and current champions Thorns.

The title-holders, top of Division One before this game, were installed as automatic favourites to lift the championship again this season.

But that was dealt a hammer blow with a defeat to neighbours Tudhoe, who had taken a first-half lead through striker Billy McKlacklen.

Mark Nicholson drew Thorns level mid-way through the second half, but Alan Barratt grabbed the late winner inside the last ten minutes in what was Tudhoe’s first league win of the season.

Boss James Curley said: “It was brilliant. This is our biggest derby of the season, we share a pitch with Thorns, and we are always in their shade, so it’s always nice to get one over a side that’s supposed to be better than you.

“We played them off the park in the first half but we tired in the second and in the end we were playing on adrenalin, but it was great to get the win.”

Meanwhile, Masons Arms won 3-1 at home to Binchester Social Club thanks to goals by Ryan Murray, Marc Costello and Michael Birch. John Wheatley scored Binchester’s goal.

Quinns won 7-1 at the North Briton with five goals by Jon-Paul Tallentire. David Parker and Stephen Quinn were also on target, while Carl Dixon got the Brit’s goal.

Bay Horse won 3-2 at home to the Voltigeur with goals by Tony Stebbings, Dale Anderson and Kyle Allen. Mark Priestley and Clifford Kirkbride scored for the Volti.
