BROWNEY BEAT OLD SHILDON Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League BROWNEY caused a stir last week with a slender 1-0 win over championship favourites Old Shildon. Only four games from the league’s fixture programme survived a severe frost that put paid to eight games. And Browney recorded arguably their result of the season after putting in a battling, gritty display against high-flyers Shildon. Striker Chris Allen grabbed the only and, all-important, goal of the game mid-way through the first half. And it was backs to the walls for Browney thereafter as they had to defend for their lives to secure the three points. “We defended brilliantly,” said boss Gerard Crooks. “I thought we were slightly the better side in the first half and deserved the lead, although the conditions made it very difficult for both sides. They came at us after half-time, as we expected, and we had to defend big time. It was a team effort and we all defended very well.” Elsewhere, Tudhoe United edged a 2-1 win over Green Tree, Christian Schofield netting both United goals, Neil Bell scoring Tree’s. Tudhoe player Tony Lennox said: “It was a very hard, close game. Both sides had a lot of chances but we’re pleased just to have edged it.” Binchester Social Club were also 2-1 winners – over Postchaise, who had taken a 1-0 first half lead. Chris Pickles pulled one back before super sub Darren Spark came off the bench to grab the winner. Sub ‘keeper Paul Sutton said: “We had the better of the first half, and went into half-time losing 1-0! It was fairly even, but I think we were slightly better overall.” Division One matches postponed were: Newton Aycliffe v Horndale, Salvins v Loves. In Division Two, the only game that survived the frost was a 1-1 draw between title-chasing Masons Arms and Shildon Athletic. Gary Dixon was on target for the Arms, with Feff Fieldson netting Athletic’s goal. Division Two matches postponed were: Cumby Arms v Grand, Victoria v Eldon Arms, Boot & Shoe v Belvedere, Masons Utd v Voltigeur, North Briton v Middlestone Moor. The Division One Cup quarter-final tie between Lakeside and Beehive was also postponed, and is due to be played this Sunday. • The next league meeting will be held at Horndale WMC, Newton Aycliffe, on Wednesday February 2, from 8pm. • Visit our site at: www.spenny-league.co.uk
