Southerne clinch Aycliffe derby cup win Division Three Cup round-up
THE SOUTHERNE club got one over one of their rivals with an opening group stage win at home to Horndale Celtic.
Nathan Winter put the Southerne one up before Lee Masrhall added a second and then Scott Hudson netted twice to give them a four-goal advantage at half-time.
Hudson completed his hat-trick after the break and Andrew Steele added the sixth to complete the win, with Paul Hughes scoring Horndale’s consolation goal.
“It was a good result but we should have scored more goals,” said Southerne boss Tony Dobson. “We had more chances to score in the second half and we never took them, I think we held off after going 4-0 up at half-time.
“But we need as many goals as possible for our goal difference if we’re to have any chance of progressing to the knockout stages, so from that point of view it was disappointing.”
Meanwhile, in the other group B game, EBAC won 8-2 at home to Masons United with goals by Mark Owen (3), John Wheatley (2), Gareth Hodgson, Darren Dye and Anthony Stonehouse.
The group A matches between Bishop Masons and Fox and Hounds, and Shildon Fox and the Navy Club, were both postponed.
