Browney hit five in first cup group game Kelvin McIntosh Division Two Cup round-up
BROWNEY drew first blood in the new-look, Champions League-style group stage of the Kelvin McIntosh Division Two Cup.
The second division league-leaders won 5-2 at home to Penny Gill to give them the perfect start to their group A campaign.
Robert Baron scored twice for Browney in the first half, while Stuart Kitching and Karl Turner were also on target to give them a 4-0, half-time lead.
Penny pulled one back with a Kevin Gilham penalty before Kitching added his second and Browney’s fifth to all-but clinch it, despite Gilham netting a second penalty before the end.
“It was a bit of a scrap in the end,” admitted Browney’s Gavin Mudd. “We started well and were cruising by half-time, but they battled back in the second half.
“They were down to 10 men and probably played better after that, they probably edged the second half. But we managed to scrap it out in the end.”
In the only other group A game, Eldon Arms won 3-2 at home to Belvedere with goals by Paul Connor, Jason Leary and Liam Gillies. Timmy Hutchinson scored both goals for the Belvedere.
The group B fixtures between Half Moon and Green Tree and Victoria and New Brancepeth were both postponed.
