BELVEDERE THROUGH TO QUARTERS
Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League
SECOND Division side Belvedere made it through to the quarter-finals of the League Cup with a 2-1 win over Masons United.
Chris Young and Andrew Short were on target to clinch the second round victory, and boss Karl Thompson admitted he was relieved to reach the last eight of the competition.
“It was a very close game,” he said. “There was nothing in it and we were just pleased to win in the end.
“Our priority is the league and hopefully getting promotion, and maybe doing well in our divisional cup as well. But it would be nice to have a strong run in the League Cup – we just need to avoid any first division sides in the next round!” Stuart Boddy netted Masons’ goal.
Shildon Athletic also progressed to the quarters with a 6-2 win over Victoria. Ross Brown (2), Jamie Scaife (2), Kevin Kavanagh and Geoff Fieldson all scored Shildon’s goals, with Jason Greenland and John Templeton getting Vic’s goals.
Voltigeur won their all-Division-One match with Horndale as goals by David Potts (2) and Chris Pennal gave them a 3-2 victory. Kyle Allen scored Horndale’s goal.
Tudhoe United are also in the quarter-finals after beating Grand 5-1 at home. Prolific striker Billy McClacklin scored a hat-trick, while Allan Barratt and Malcolm Thexton also scored. Scott Wright was on target for the Grand.
In the first round of the League Cup, Hunwick beat Postchaise 5-1 with goals by Darren Wilson (3), Ross Brown and James Melville, with Lee Taylor scoring Postchaise’s goal. Hunwick meet North Briton in the second round.
Green Tree, meanwhile, will play Croxdale in the second round after they won 6-3 at Browney in the first. Barry Liddle (2), Gavin McIntyre, Andrew Walton, Matt Carrick and Neil Redden scored for the Tree, with Brian Newman, Dale Phillips and Peter Boucher scoring for Browney.
The outstanding second round games are: Hunwick v North Briton, Green Tree v Croxdale, Eldon Arms v Masons Arms and Ash Tree/Old Shildon v Binchester SC.

Meanwhile, Old Shildon dented league-leaders Masons Arms’ championship hopes with a 4-2 victory last week.
Paul Whensley scored a hat-trick, with James Hedley also chipping in with a goal, while Andrew Short and Kevin Dodds scored Masons’ goals.
Thorns beat Lakeside 3-0 in the only other first division match.
In Division Two, North Briton won their third match of the campaign with a comfortable 5-1 win over Gainford.
Mark Hodges (2), Phil Judge, David O’Neil and Richard Jameson scored for the Brit, with Bevan Cregg scoring Gainford’s only goal.
Brit Secretary Judge said: “It took us 10 minutes to get going but once we did I thought there was only one team in it. We’ve been playing well lately, just without scoring the goals, so it was good to see them bag a few. We can hopefully take that forward into this week’s game and the rest of the season.”
Elsewhere, Eldon Arms won 1-0 against Binchester Social Club thanks to a David Leary strike, while Croxdale beat Atlantic Bar 8-2. Phillip Wilkinson bagged five goals, with Steven Robey, Christopher Carling and Dean Taylor getting one apiece. Mick Woulston and Keith Penman scored Atlantic’s goals.
• Clubs are reminded that they must pay for their allocation of raffle tickets for the Christmas Prize Draw at the next meeting.
The next league meeting will take place at the North Briton, Aycliffe Village, Newton Aycliffe, on Wednesday 8th December 2004, from 8pm.
