Goalkeeper scores freak goal!
Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League
Spennymoor Sunday League snapper Mike Hill might have been at a Division One title clash, but he missed what turned out to be the Game of the Week in Division Two!
For what is only normally seen on TV and in special ‘All Time Gaffs’ videos actually happened at Masons United last week!
Veteran goalkeeper Stuart Timmiss could hardly have expected his long kick out of his hands to reach the half-way line, let alone the goal.
But to his and his team-mates delight, the ball bounced wickedly over a stranded Half Moon goalkeeper to clinch the third and all-important goal after going two goals down to win them three points!
Their Secretary Andrew Simpson explains: “Stuart’s long beat the defence and, when Stephen Alderson put the keeper under pressure, they both missed it and it bounced over them and in! I think Stuart was particularly excited as it was his first-ever goal!”
Chris Larkman scored the first of Mason’ goals in their amazing comeback, with Gavin Alderson grabbing the second.

Meanwhile, Croxdale heaped yet further misery on plucky George & Dragon. Just a fortnight after beating them 16-0, they beat them 11-0 on their own turf with goals by Iain Ambrosini (5), Brent Mailer (2), David Wallace (2), Andrew Sorrell and Kevin Hepburn.
Croxdale boss Craig Fish said: “we’re more than happy with the way the season has gone up to now. We haven’t lost a league game yet, although it was obviously very disappointing to be knocked out of the Kelvin McIntosh Cup for obvious reasons. But we’re going well in the league and we’ve just got to take each game as it comes and hopefully keep winning.”
Elsewhere in Division Two, Belvedere won 5-2 at Green Tree with goals by Lee Nixon (3) and Jonathan Millward (2).
Ash Tree won 6-3 at home to Horndale Celtic thanks to hat-tricks by Steven Walton and Lee Gobin, while Victoria won 2-1 at Shildon Athletic with goals by Jason Greenland and Dave Grainger.
The games between North Briton and Atlantic Bar and Southerne Club and Quinns were postponed.
In Division One, Hunwick Joiners stepped up their title challenge with a thumping win over Voltigeur.
Hunwick, strong contenders for the championship this season along with Masons Arms, wasted no time in boosting their goal difference with a commanding performance.
James Melville netted four and Sean Nicholson three, with Paul Taylor and Ian Wise getting a goal apiece.
And Hunwick Secretary Aidan McCabe said: “We’ve been getting a decent turn-out of players recently and so we’ve been able to put some form together and get some really good results.
“Defensively we’ve been a lot better since the start of the season, and the strikers are doing their jobs as well now, which has culminated in some good results.” Clifford Kirkbride and Chris Pennal scored Volti’s goals.

Meanwhile, Thorns maintained their title push with a 4-1 win over championship dark horses Tudhoe United. See Game of the Week feature.
Elsewhere in Division One, Old Shildon bounced back from their recent indifferent form with a 5-2 home win over Bay Horse with goals by Paul Whensley (3) and Phil Appleby.
Browney won 2-1 at Eldon Arms thanks to strikes by John Kidd and Peter Boucher, David Hall getting Eldon’s only goal.

Lakeside also continued their impressive recent form with a 7-0 win at Hogans that saw them jump to second in the league. Andy Clay scored a hat-trick, while there was one each from Marc De Lucia, Steve Hepples, Dave Neale and Martin Walker.
Binchester Social Club won 2-1 at Penny Gill with goals by Andrew Hodgson and Lee Furber. Aaron McGarr scored the Penny.

• The league is holding a Christmas Party Night at the Southerne Club in Newton Aycliffe on Friday 9th December. A Pie & Peas supper will be available and entertainment will be provided by top local band The Zoo, while the league’s annual Christmas Prize Draw will also be made.
Tickets costing just £3 are available to league members – while any remaining tickets will be distributed evenly between remaining clubs, so numbers (and prizes donated by clubs) are required on the night of the next league meeting at the Southerne Club on Wednesday 7th December.
