Oct 14th 2003 - 2nd Division

BRIT CONCEDE FIRST LEAGUE DEFEAT
Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League
DIVISION TWO
TOP-OF-THE-TABLE North Briton conceded their first defeat of the season with a narrow home defeat to the hands of Shildon Athletic.
Ryan Laffey and Christopher Ross scored first half goals to give Athletic a 2-0 half-time lead.
And, despite a Dominic Rich goal five minutes from time followed by heavy pressure, they held out for the narrow win.
“It’s a great result and a welcome boost,” said Secretary Wayne Stout. “We haven’t enjoyed the best of starts through several injuries, and it was pleasing that we played so well against the team top of our division.”
Brit Secretary Phil Judge said: “We were never at the races and never really looked like scoring. After such a good start to the season it’s very disappointing – I think most the lads were a bit worse for ware after their Saturday night exploits!
Meanwhile, Belvedere won 6-2 at Cumby Arms. Lee Nixon (2), Tim Hutchinson, Andrew Trotter, David Brown and Colin Walker scored their goals.
“It was a closer game than the scoreline suggests,” admitted Belvedere Secretary Karl Thompson. “The first half was very scrappy, but it opened up in the second half and both sides had plenty of chances – we just took our chances when they came along and that was the difference.”
Elsewhere, Masons Arms won 5-1 at home to Victoria. Gary Dixon (2), Stewart Thompson, Ian Crow and Justin Fox scored for the victors, with Marc Nelson netting Vic’s only goal.
Eldon Arms won 4-0 at Masons United thanks to goals by Andy Malkin (2), Michael Walker and Simon Malkin.
• Club secretaries are reminded to contact Secretary Mike Hill on 01388 608062 for any queries regarding fixtures, while referees should contact Registration Secretary Tommy Lye on 01388 773550 for any queries.
• The league would also like to wish Loves and North Briton all the very best of luck in this Sunday’s Durham County Sunday Cup. The Loves travel to Hartlepool Welfare Cosmopolitan, while the Brit entertain Coundon WMC.
