LAKESIDE THROUGH TO QUARTERS Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League LAKESIDE progressed to the quarter-finals of the Division One Cup last week, but needed extra-time to out-do a stubborn Penny Gill side. Lakeside took the lead twice in the first half and again in the second, only for the Gill to come fighting back with a spirited performance. But extra-time proved decisive and Lakeside bagged three in the 30 minutes extra to book themselves a quarter-final tie in the competition. “We were pleased with the win after a fighting performance,” said Lakeside manager Stuart Hodgson. “Penny Gill proved a stubborn side and gave us a very tough game, but I was delighted with the way we stuck at our game and I think fitness proved the decider in the end.” Marc De Lucia (2), Steve Hepples (2), Ryan Heathwaite, Dave Neale and Kelvin Smith were on target for the Lakeside, while Kevin Gilham (2) and Paul Jones (2) scored Salvins’ goals. Meanwhile, Hunwick Joiners also needed extra-time to overcome Tudhoe United. Sean Nicholson and James Melville put Hunwick into a two-goal lead in normal time, only for Tudhoe to claw their way back into the game with goals by Christian Schofield and Billy McClacklan. But Melville grabbed his second of the game in extra-time to clinch it for Hunwick. “We knew it would be a tough game,” said Hunwick Secretary Aidan McCabe. “They have already beaten us in the league so we knew what we were up against, but after taking a two-goal lead they fought their way back. We changed things around a bit and thankfully it worked.” Elsewhere, Thorns beat Middridge Bay Horse 7-0 with goals by Ian Woodhall (3), Sean Nicholson (2), Stuart Rand and Mark Nichoilson. Old Shildon beat Hogans 4-2 with goals by Anthony Moss (2), Paul Wilson and John Poulter. Alex Robson and Michael Hudson scored for Hogans. Eldon Arms also progressed to the quarter-finals, but needed extra-time to edge Browney 6-5. So Hunwick Joiners, Thorns, Lakeside, Old Shildon and Eldon Arms joins the three teams with byes, Masons Arms, Voltigeur and Binchester Social Club in the quarter finals. In the first round of the Kelvin McIntosh Division Two Cup last week, North Briton were boosted with their extra-time win over the Ash Tree, recently buoyed by some positive recent results. Gary Donald, Michael Hannon, Thomas Chandler, Mark Hodges and an own goal scored the goals for the Brit. And winning Secretary Gary Donald said: “We trailed during the game and so it was good to see us come back into it and eventually win it. We were hanging on in the end but there were a lot of tired legs so it was very pleasing.” Elsewhere, Belvedere were 6-0 winners at the Southern Club thanks to goals by Lee Nixon (3), Brendan Mullen, Timothy Hutchinson and Andrew Short. Belvedere Secretary Karl Thompson said: “We made hard work of it, they had a lot of possession from the back to midfield but lacked any threat up front. But our lads thought it was going to be a push-over and made hard work of it.” Horndale Celtic continued their recent good form by beating George & Dragon 3-2,while Victoria were 4-2 winners at Half Moon. New Brancepeth won 3-2 at Green Tree. Belvedere, Horndale Celtic, Victoria, North Briton and New Brancepeth join Croxdale (bye) in the quarter-finals, while first round ties between Quinns and Masons United and Atlantic Bar and Shildon Athletic are due to be played this Sunday.
