League plans to add third division Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League AMBITIOUS league officials are making plans to further expand the league this summer by adding a third division. Due to the continued development of the league over the years, as well as the growing pool of loyal referees, Spenny officials have penciled changes which would convert it to three divisions of 11 teams – increasing the number of clubs from the current 28 up to 33. There have already been a number of enquiries from teams wanting to join the league for the 2006-07 season from throughout County Durham.
And the league is also keen to increase competitiveness throughout the divisions as well as significantly reducing the number of midweek league games.
Officials plan to put it to a vote among existing clubs in the hope of making a popular decision. “The league has been growing and developing rapidly over the last three to four years,” said League Secretary Mike Hill. “We receive a growing number of enquiries every summer and with every season our pool of referees grows ever stronger and our ability to fulfil fixtures, weather permitting, has been second-to-none.
“That’s why we are considering expanding the league to three divisions and would therefore welcome any additional queries from established clubs so we can consider it further with existing members. “This is still just a proposal and depends on the majority of members there being sufficient interest from suitably qualified teams who meet our strict rules on admission.” The league will speak to existing clubs in due course, while officials are also considering an on-line poll on their official website, spenny-league.co.uk
Meanwhile, severe snow did to put pay to all but two games in the league last week. In one of the games that was played, Division One side Hunwick Joiners were dumped out of the League Cup by second division high-fliers Quinns. See the latest Game of the Week feature for more details and pictures.
In the only other game last week, which was in Division Two, New Brancepeth beat Atlantic Bar 2-0 with goals on either side of half-time by Edward Watson and Michael Gibbons. Victorious manager Neville Hindmarch said: "The weather made it difficult for both teams, but credit to both sides for carrying on. We created a lot of chances and maybe should have scored more, but we settled for the three points." The Division One match between Tudhoe United and Eldon Arms started but was abandoned due to the weather after 50 minutes with the score at 1-1. • The next league meeting will take place at Belvedere WMC on Wednesday 22nd March from 8pm. |
