HUNWICK GET THEIR REVENGE
Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League
HUNWICK JOINERS finally got one over on their rivals Thorns with a 2-0 win in the B&A Trophy.
Hunwick – who were pipped to the league championship and the Division One Cup by Thorns – took the lead through James Melville, mid-way through the second half after a goalless first 45 minutes at the Coxhoe Athletic football ground.
Lee Genner then doubled their lead ten minutes later, and effectively bagged Hunwick the cup in a tight game.
“There was nothing between the two sides,” said victorious Secretary Aidan McCabe. “It really was very close and I think it was a case of whoever got the first goal would go on to win the game.
“They missed a good chance not long before we got our first goal, and so that proved. But it was important to win this final because, after such a good season for us, it was in danger of ending up a bad season. We narrowly missed out on the title and lost our first cup, so we’re obviously delighted to have won this one.”
Meanwhile, Masons Arms won their first piece of silverware last Friday when they edged a tight Paul Stevens Cup Final over Horndale at Moor Lane in Newton Aycliffe.
The Spennymoor League held the special cup final in the name of former member Paul Stevens, who sadly passed away more than a year ago.
The league named its Invitation Trophy after Aycliffe Sports Club legend Paul Stevens following his sudden death last year.
And Masons edged the inaugural final 1-0 after extra-time, with John Savage scoring the all-important goal.
Masons Secretary John Booth said: “I felt for Horndale because it was a tired extra-time for both sides after there was nothing at all between the two sides. We capitalised on a mistake at the back and that was the difference.
“But the lads were over the moon to win a trophy and have something to show for our efforts this season.”
The league’s final game of the season is the League Cup Final, between Binchester Social Club and Masons Arms, due to be played at Coxhoe Athletic football ground this Sunday (15th May), kicking off at 10.30am.
• The next league meeting will be the league’s AGM, which is due to take place at the Lakeside, Woodham, Newton Aycliffe, on Wednesday 8th June, from 8pm. All clubs wishing to take part in the 2005-06 season must attend.
• The league’s end-of-season presentation night will be held at Old Shildon WMC on Friday 27th May. Trophy-awarding will be followed by singing group Koncept.
