LOVES CLINCH LEAGUE CUP

BROOMPARK loves sought revenge when they lifted the League Cup last week.
They narrowly missed out on the league championship when Thorns pipped them to the title by just two points.
But Loves made up for it by beating them 3-0 in the League Cup Final at Spennymoor United’s Brewery Field ground last Sunday.
Stephen Hancock, Terry Nelson and Gary Hindmarch were on target to seal the win.
Victorious boss Dave Jones said: “We over the moon. It was disappointing to have lost the title but this has made up for it. We were well up for it on the day and I think deserved the win. It was pleasing to finish the season with something to show for our efforts after such a good year.”
A despondent Thorns are now ruing their fifth cup final defeat in just three seasons. Manager Dave McWaters said: “We’re gutted. We’ve played well all season and for some reason, again, we’re not at the races in a final. But I’m taking nothing away from Loves at all, they played very well and wanted it more than we did.”
Hunwick were crowned Second Division champions last week – they are promoted to Division Two along with runners-up Masons Arms.
Green Tree and Binchester Social Club are relegated from the top flight.
• The next league meeting will be the AGM, held at the Beehive on Wednesday 9th June.
• The league’s end-of-season presentation night will be held at Old Shildon WMC on Friday June 5th. Tickets are £3, contact Martin Walker on 07949 840232.
