HUNWICK WIN TITLE CLASH Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League HUNWICK JOINERS took one huge step towards winning the league title with a crushing 5-0 win over top-of-the-table Thorns. And last year’s champions’ goal difference also took a hefty blow, with the 5-0 defeat drawing the two clubs all square on plus 41. It now means Hunwick’s two games in hand and, more importantly, two wins would gift them the Division One title. Lee Genner (2), Sean Brown, Shaun Nicholson and Stephen Howe scored Hunwick’s goals last week. Meanwhile, their first game in hand this Tuesday night is an away match at Browney, while they have no game this Sunday when Thorns play Browney. Hunwick then play Old Shildon at home next Tuesday (April 19), and their last game comes on Sunday April 24, when the championship is likely to be decided by a home match with Masons Arms. Meanwhile, Masons Arms’ hopes of finishing strongly were boosted with a 3-0 win at home to Salvins. Steven Fothergill struck twice and John Nicholson once to ensure the win. And Secretary John Booth said: “It was a good, steady away win to set us up nicely for this Sunday’s League Cup semi-final.” Elsewhere in Division One last Sunday, Horndale beat Tudhoe United 6-3 thanks to five goals by Tony Stebbings and one from Kyle Allen, while Grand beat Browney 4-2 with goals by Michael Davidson (2), Kevin Priestly and Scott Wright. Old Shildon beat Voltigeur 5-3 thanks to goals by Paul Whensley, Kevin Wilson, Adam Pinkney, Anthony Moss and Kevin Russell. In Division Two last week, North Briton continued their good recent form with a 6-2 win over third-placed Green Tree. Mark Hodges scored four and Dave Patrick netted twice in the win, but Brit Secretary Phil Judge admitted: “It’s too little too late! We’re starting to play well now, but we don’t have anything to play for. It will hopefully stand us in good stead for next season, though, and with some new additions in the summer we can build on this.” Darren Dye and Matt Carrick scored Green Tree’s goals. Meanwhile, Binchester Social Club continued their quest for the Division Two title with an 8-0 win at Gainford, with John Wheatley (3), Lee Furber (2), Andrew Hodgson (2) and Anthony Binks scoring the goals. Binchester are nine points adrift of leaders Eldon Arms with five games in hand, and face a tough run-in to the season. They were due to play Cumby Arms away this Tuesday and Victoria at home Thursday (April 14). Their other four games are Atlantic Bar away (Sunday 17th April), Ash Tree home (Tuesday April 19), Green Tree home (Thursday April 21) and the final, potentially title-deciding match with Eldon Arms on Sunday April 24. Elsewhere in Division Two last week, Belvedere won 4-0 at Shildon Athletic with a brace apiece by John-Paul Greaves and Lee Nixon, while Croxdale beat Cumby Arms 5-0 thanks to goals by James Richardson, Gavin Bell, Jay Wilson, Michael Watson and Craig Flowers. Ash Tree were 6-0 winners over Victoria. |
