STEWART BRACE NETS THORNS’ QF DRAW
Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League
TWO goals by Anthony Stewart booked Thorns a place in the quarter-finals of the League Cup.
Dale Phillips had given Browney a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the game, before striker Andrew Richardson equalized before the break.
And Stewart netted twice to gain Dave McWaters’ side their passage into the last eight of the competition.
“A scrappy game,” admitted McWaters. “The conditions made it hard for both sides to play any football, but we’ve grabbed two goals in the second half and we’re just pleased to have progressed to the next round.”
Browney boss Gerard Crooks tipped Thorns for league glory following the defeat. “I think they’ll win the title,” he said. “We kept it close at times but they’re a very good side this year – the best we’ve played up to now by far.”
Elsewhere in the League Cup, Loves beat Horndale 6-2 thanks to goals by Carl Frost (2), Jay Wilson (2), Vince Chatterton and Gary Hindmarch. Mark Silvester and David Teder scored for Horndale.
Tudhoe United won 4-0 at Binchester Social Club with goals by Billy McLacklin (2), Carl Wilson and Gary White, while it took Shildon Athletic extra-time to knock Voltigeur out, eventually going through 4-3. Jeff Fieldson, Ross Brown, Darren Dodds and Chris Young scored for Athletic, with Andrew Taylor, Phil Curry and Mark Hastwell netting for the Volty.
Grand beat Eldon Arms 2-1 with two goals by Mark Priestly. John Sweeney scored for Eldon and, finally, Salvins won 1-0 at Lakeside with a goal by Kevin Dodds.
The quarter-finals of the competition now consists of: Hunwick, Thorns, Grand, Loves, Salvins, Shildon Athletic, Tudhoe United and Newton Aycliffe or Old Shildon.
In the only Division One game last week, Green Tree and Postchaise played out a 4-4 draw. Darren Dye (3) and Andrew Walton scored for the Tree, woth Lee Taylor (3) and Paul Thompson netting for Postchaise.
In Division Two, Masons Arms jumped to second with a 7-0 win over Masons United.
John Thompson (2), Stephen Fothergill (2), John Nicholson, Andrew Elliott and Gary Dixon were all on target.
Freescoring Phil Price was on target again for top-of-the-table Belvedere as they recorded a narrow, 1-0 win over Cumby Arms.
