Masons claim Quinns’ cup scalp
League Cup Round One

DIVISION THREE side Bishop Masons claimed the scalp of top-flight Quinns when they dumped them out of the League Cup.

Quinns, third in Division One, were undone by a late strike after eventually getting on top Masons, despite a sticky start.

Simon Hodgson put the home side ahead only for David Parker to equalise for Quinns.

But Kenny Melvin struck in the last minute to snatch a shock win and book their place in the second round of the competition.

Masons defender Steve Brown said: “We had the better first half and created a lot of chances, but they came back in the second half and were probably the better team. But we did well – we know that on our day we’re not bothered about anyone!”

Elsewhere in the League Cup, holders Masons Arms began their defence of the League Cup with an emphatic win over Division Three side Navy Club.

Masons beat Thorns 2-1 in last season’s final at Coxhoe, and kicked off this year’s campaign with a 11-1 win. Lewis Dodds (3), Liam McRoy (3), Tom Fothergill (2), Marc Costello (2) and Lee Atkinson were all on the scoresheet. Wayne Pratt scored Navy’s goal.

Half Moon won their penalty shoot-out with Fox and Hounds after the two sides drew 1-1 after normal and extra-time. Steve Tulip put the Moon ahead after ten minutes, only for Steven Walton to equalise five minutes later. It was a stalemate after that, and Moon won the ensuing penalty shoot-out 4-2.

Shildon Fox and Hounds won 3-0 at Green Tree with goals by Darren Foster, Stephen Hall and an own goal.
