BINNY EDGE EXTRA-TIME NAIL-BITER Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League BINCHESTER Social Club edged a nail-biting B&A Trophy first round clash with Eldon Arms after extra-time. Goals by Andrew Sams and John Sweeney for Eldon and Scott Smith and Kevin Featherstone for Binny brought the 90 minutes to a stalemate. But Chris Almond grabbed an early goal in the first period of extra-time, then Alan Bailey grabbed the fourth for Binchester to clinch a second round tie. Secretary Steve Sutton said: “It was a good result – Eldon gave us a very tough game and their league position certainly doesn’t do them any justice. They enjoyed more possession in the second half, while not really creating any chances, and we won it early in extra-time.” Old Shildon knocked Salvins out with a 7-2 win. Despite a close first half, and two penalties for Salvins, converted by Mark Nicholson – four goals by Thomas Louden and one each from Martin Hedley, Paul Wilson and Robert Wilson ensured Shildon’s passage into the second round hat. Shildon nidfielder James Hedley said: “They kept coming back at us and the two goals gave them a lot of confidence, but we controlled the second half and finished comfortable winners in the end.” Meanwhile, Lakeside won 5-1 at home to Belvedere. Steve Wooward netted from the penalty spot, while Dave Welsh bagged two. Strikers Marc De Lucia and Wayne Marram scored the other two. “A pleasing win and a decent performance,” said Lakeside manager Stuart Hodgson. “We controlled the game for large periods and should have buried it long before the end. A bit of complacency crept in but still a convincing win.” Lee Nixon scored Belvedere’s only goal. Horndale progressed to the second stage with an 8-3 win over Middlestone Moor. Hat-tricks by Wayne Pratt and Mark Silvester plus strikes by David Teddar and Scott Mason ensured that – Craig Parker (2) and Michael Symons scored for Middlestone. High-flying Loves also progressed with a 6-2 win at home to Browney – Gary Hindmarsh (2), Stephen Hancock, Michael Chapman, Brent Naylor and Terry Nelson scoring the goals. Masons Arms won 3-2 at Cumby Arms with goals by Peter Kerr (2) and Gary Dixon – Russell Cant scored both for Cumby. Postchaise won comfortably, 8-2, at Masons United. Paul Thompson (3), Paul Gargett (2), Lee Taylor, Brendan Mullen and Paul Downes scored the goals for the winners. Paul Wilson and Chris Strong netted Masons’ goals. Finally, Beehive went through to the next round with a narrow 201 win at North Briton thanks to goals by Mark Pattinson and Kenny Melville. Phil Judge scored the Brit’s goal. • Club secretaries are reminded to contact Secretary Mike Hill on 01388 608062 for any queries regarding fixtures, while referees should contact Registration Secretary Tommy Lye on 01388 773550 for any queries.
