ATLANTIC GET FIRST WIN Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League SECOND Division side Atlantic Bar won their first game of the season with a 5-2 win over Gainford. Mick Woolston scored twice, while Mike Bainbridge, Steven Haigh and Keith Penman also scored to gift them the three points. And the club’s Secretary Matty Robinson admitted: “It was a great result. We played well, especially in the second half and probably should have scored more goals. We’ve been playing quite well recently so hopefully we can use this to get more results in the league.” Meanwhile, Binchester Social Club went top of Division Two with their 6-2 win at Masons United, after Croxdale only drew 1-1 with Eldon Atrms. John Wheatley scored a hat-trick for Binny, while Chris Pickles (2) and Michael Tinkler were also on the scoresheet. Secretary Steve Sutton said: “We hadn’t played well for a while and we needed a kick up the pants, and this was one of our best performances of the season. We showed what we are truly capable of and why we are capable of winning the league. We just have to keep the consistency going for every gme.” Elsewhere in Division Two, Ash Tree won 3-0 at Shildon Athletic thanks to a Steven Walton hat-trick. Green Tree beat Cumby Arms 6-4, while North Briton beat Belvedere 4-2. Old Shildon progressed to the second round of the Division One Cup with a penalty shoot-out win over Masons Arms. Kevin Dodds had put Masons into a 1-0 lead, before Martin Hedley equalized before half-time. Peter Kerr then made it 2-1 to Masons, but James Hedley grabbed the equalizer to force extra-time. No goals in the additional 30 minutes brought the shoot-out, with Shildon stopper Chris Jones making three saves to pave his side’s passage to the quarter-finals. “It was a very close game,” said Shildon’s Dave Hedley. “There was really nothing between the two sides, similar to the league game we played earlier in the season. But it was a very good result for us.” Masons’ John Booth said: “I thought we did enough to win the game in normal time. We had the chances, but didn’t take them, and penalty shoot-outs are always a lottery so it was always going to be 50-50.” Meanwhile, Thorns continued their title chase with a 3-1 win at Voltigeur thanks to goals by Andrew Richardson, Anthony Stewart and Leigh Lamb. Tudhoe United won by no less than 10-4 against Browney, with Alan Barratt getting six goals. Billy McLacklin (2), Dave Hugill and Aaron McGarr also scored for Tudhoe. Horndale won 4-1 at Lakeside with goals by Dale Anderson (2), Lee Foster and Mark Silvester. Morgan Fielding scored for Lakeside. Hunwick also won 6-0 at the Grand.
