ON-FIRE LOVES BEAT OLD SHILDON
Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League
CHAMPIONSHIP Dark Horses Broompark Loves caused a stir by beating firm title favourites Old Shildon last week.
Goals by Andrew Stewart and Terry Nelson cancelled out an earlier own goal to record an impressive win over last season’s league runners-up.
“The lads are thrilled and we’re enjoying our season up to now,” crowed Secretary Keith Flowers. “We’ve got a good set of players together now and we have 20 players turning out every Sunday morning, desperate to play. We won three trophies last year and we want to improve this season - and we’ve started well on the road to that!” Darren Plaice scored Shildon’s goal.
Meanwhile, Thorns seem to have got their campaign back on track after their blip with Loves. They beat Beehive 4-2 thanks to a hat-trick by Martin Longthorne and one from Mark Russell.
“It was a hard game,” admitted Thorns veteran Craig Cowens. “We had a man sent off, but that made us stronger. We seemed comfortable at 4-0, but they battled back and pulled two goals back. It was a good result in the end.” Kenny Melvin and Mark Paterson scored for Beehive.<Top>

Eleswhere, Lakeside were 4-2 winners at Salvins after going two-nil down through goals by Mark Nicholson and Daniel Pattinson. Steve Hepples, Martin Walker and two from Wayne Marram scored in Lakeside’s 20-minute revival.
Browney and Green Tree drew 3-3, Graham Wallace, Dale Phillips and Peter Boucher scoring for Browney and Barry Little (2) and Matt Carrick for the Tree.
Finally, Horndale continued their good form with a 5-4 win at Tudhoe United - three from striker Wayne Pratt plus strikes by Mark Silvester and Tony Stebbings ensured that. Christian Schofield (2), Billy McLacklin and Wayne Hamm netted for Tudhoe.<Top>

In Division Two, Cumby Arms were eventual winners in a scrappy, 11-goal contest with new side Voltigeur, running out 7-4 winners.
Despite Voltigeur goals from Tony Craddock (2) and Gary Hastie and Kevin Brown, a hat-trick from Jonathan Hall plus strikes by Michael Hannon (2), Michael Hestletine and Russell Cant bagged the three points for Cumby.
“They were the better side in the first half,” conceded Voltigeur Secretary Dean Mains. “They controlled us and deserved to be comfortably in front, but I thought we might have just shaded the second half.”

Cumby Secretary Alan Morton said: “It was a scrappy game and we didn’t play particularly well, but it’s a vital win that could kick-start our season after a stop-start season up to now - hopefully it can now help us climb the table and challenge for honours.”<Top>

Meanwhile, there as nothing between top two sides North Briton and Hunwick Joiners as they played out a 2-2 draw.
Dave O’Neil and Phil Judge were on target for the Brit, with Sean Brown and Steven Howe netting for Hunwick.

Elsewhere, Shildon Athletic won 4-0 at Victoria through goals by Richard Thompson (2), Geoff Fieldson and Chris Ross, while Belvedere beat Eldon Arms 2-1 with goals by Lee Nixon and Andrew Short. Simon Malkin scored for Eldon.

Finally, Masons United beat Middlestone Moor 5-2, with a hat-trick by Chris Larkman plus strikes by Wayne Mundy and Craig Taylor earning that. John Rammage and Michael Symons found the net for Middlestone.<Top>
