TUDHOE BEAT RIVALS THORNS Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League TUDHOE UNITED knocked rivals Thorns out of the League Cup last week. Allan Barrett scored twice, while there was one each from Christian Schofield and Billy McClacklin as United won 4-2. The two teams share a pitch in Spennymoor, and Tudhoe Secretary James Curley says the victory has been a long time coming. “We’ve waited a few years for that one!” he said. “They’ve always had a good record against us and there is a little friendly rivalry between the two sides so it was good to finally get one over on them! “But it was a cracking game of football. We had two goals disallowed and also missed a penalty, so could have maybe scored more, so I think we deserved to win.” Thorns boss Dave McWaters was gracious in defeat. “They thoroughly deserved it,” he said. “We weren’t at the races and they were well up for it. They probably should have scored more goals, but we didn’t deserve to get anything out of the game.” Mark Nicholson and Martin Longthorne scored Thorns’ goals. Due to County Cup commitments, there were only five games played in the Spennymoor League last Sunday, all in the same competition. And Division Two side Belvedere caused another upset when they knocked Division One side Salvins out to progress to the second round. The two sides drew 2-2 after 90 minutes and 3-3 after extra-time, with Belvedere edging the penalty shoot-out 4-2. “I thought we were lucky to go through,” admitted Belvedere boss Karl Thompson. “They peppered our goal and should have won the game by half-time, but they’ve missed their chances and we’ve somehow scraped through on penalties!” Adrian Brown (2) and Lee Nixon scored Belvedere’s goals, while David Nutt, Paul Jones and Clive Underwood scored for Salvins. Second division Eldon Arms also caused an upset when they beat struggling top-flight side Lakeside 2-1 thanks to goals by David Leary and Jonathan Corner. “It was a cracking game,” said Eldon Secretary David Sayers. “They pressured us late in the game at 2-1 and hit the bar twice in the last 10 minutes, while our goalkeeper made some blinding saves and won our man-of-the-match award, but other than that I thought it was a very even game.” Wayne Marram scored for Lakeside. Elsewhere, Grand beat Gainford 7-2 with goals by Scott Wright (3), Sean Hunter (2), Simon Marshall and Michael Kay, while Masons United won 6-2 at home to Atlantic Bar with four goals by Chris Larkman and one apiece from George Richardson and Stuart Boddy. • Clubs are reminded that they MUST take their allocation of raffle tickets for the Christmas Prize Draw at the next meeting. The league’s prize draw, to be held in December, has always been its biggest fundraising event of the year, and all clubs’ continued support would be appreciated. The next league meeting will take place at Old Shildon WMC in Shildon on Wednesday 3rd November, when all clubs must take a minimum allocation of £50-worth of tickets. Clubs are more than welcome to take as many tickets as they like. As usual, clubs will take 50% of sales from the tickets.
