Castle aim to finish with a flourish
Division Three round-up

CASTLE aim to finish their season strongly and clinch the third spot in Division Three after they won a nine-goal thriller with EBAC.

Division leaders Shildon Fox and Hounds and second-placed Aycliffe Village have been confirmed as promoted following results in the last week.

And Castle jumped a place to fourth over Bishop Masons with the 5-4 win after Masons were beaten by Masons United.

Manager Peter Baker is hoping his side can enjoy positive results in their final two games against the Masons and Aycliffe Village.

“There’s more than just pride to play for,” he said. “We still have a realistic chance of finishing third. The best two teams have already sealed promotion, they deserve it.

“But I’d like to think we can still finish third if we win our last two games and Merrington Fox slip up in their last game. It might be a big ask but that’s what we have to aim for, it’s been a good season for us in our first year in the league and it would be nice to finish it strongly.”

John Cunningham (2), Paul Thompson, David McCormick and Matt Waistell scored Castle’s goals in their win over EBAC, while John Wheatley (3) and Gareth Hodgson were on target for EBAC.

Elsewhere in Division Three last week, leaders Shildon Fox and Hounds took one step closer to the league title with a 4-1 win at the Southerne Club thanks to goals by Stephen Hall (3) and Michael Lumley.

Chris Larkman (2), Johnny Breckin and Paul Scott were on target for Masons United in their 4-3 win over Bishop Masons. Simon Hodgson (2) and James Barron scored Masons’ goals.

In group B of the Division Three Cup last Sunday, Aycliffe Village made sure of their passage to the semi-finals with a 3-0 win at Horndale Celtic with goals by Marc Addy, Darren Griffiths and Shaun Sproates.
