CROXDALE RESUME SEASON
Jackson Anderson Accountants Spennymoor Sunday League
CROXDALE resumed their season in style as their players were determined to win in the name of their fallen friend.
The club was hit by the tragic death of Kelvin McIntosh last month, and Croxdale resumed their fixture programme with a thumping 8-1 over Gainford last Sunday, despite the league being hit yet again by the bad weather – with only three games going ahead.
Secretary Kimberley Hutchinson, Kelvin’s girlfriend, said: “The lads said they had to go out and win it for Kelvin. They are all very close and always have been, but this has brought them even closer together, and now they want to go on and win something for him.”
Croxdale play Binchester Social Club in the semi-finals of the newly-named Kelvin McIntosh Division Two Cup this Sunday, and Kimberley added: “We’re especially determined to win that cup after the league decided to name it after Kelvin, so the lads will be doing everything they can to win on Sunday.”
Phil Wilkinson scored four goals in the 8-1 rout over Gainford, while Craig Flowers scored two. There was also one a-piece from Steven Robey and Gain Bell. Natt Quinn scored Gainford’s only goal.
Elesewhere in Division Two last week, Victoria won 1-0 at Belvedere thanks to a David Carr goal.
The following games were postponed: Atlantic Bar v Shildon Athletic, Cumby Arms v Masons United, Binchester SC v Ash Tree, North Briton v Green Tree.
Meanwhile, Thorns became the first club in the league to make it to the final of a cup when they beat Horndale 2-1 in the semi-finals of the Division One Cup last week.
Ian Woodhall put them 1-0 up before Horndale equalised right on half-time.
And despite a valiant effort by Horndale, a Sean Longthorne goal and some gritty defending saw Thorns’ passage to the final.
“I thought it was a very tough, close game,” said Thorns boss Dave McWaters. “They battled hard and made it difficult for us. They created a few chances, as did we, but we defended well and took our chances so that was the decider in the end.”
The other semi between Old Shildon and Hunwick was postponed.
