Just three days after Aycliffe claimed the divisional league title, Shildon threatened to spoil their party when Michael Boddy put them 1-0 up and had chances to score more during some sustained pressure.

But Aycliffe weathered the storm and two quick goals before half-time – the first by Kieran Megran and the second by Marc Addy – put them in the driving seat.

Megran then completed his hat-trick after the break to all-but rubber-stamp Aycliffe’s double, despite a late Steven Hall goal for Shildon.

Aycliffe boss Steve Moran said: “We’re delighted with the double but hat’s off to Shildon Fox, they have been up there all season and, without wanting to sound patronising, they have shown great dignity during the last two games of the season.

“In an ideal world I suppose both sides would have won one trophy each but we, just like Shildon Fox, wanted to win both.”

Shildon Secretary Dave Owens said: “We took the lead and really could have gone on to score more, but then stopped and fair play to Aycliffe they wanted to win and deserved it in the end.

“It has been a great season. I think there’s mutual respect between the clubs as we both know we’ve been excellent all season, it just wasn’t to be for us. I think the competition between the two will continue in the second division next season, we’ll both be up there.”
