AYCLIFFE VILLAGE gained some ground on Fox and Hounds with a 5-3 win at home to the second-placed team.

Leaders Shildon Fox had no game – and with promotion rivals Masons United and Castle playing out a ten-goal stalemate, it saw Aycliffe Village jump up a place to fourth to improve their own promotion hopes.

Aycliffe took the lead through Darren Griffiths but Mark Surtees drew Fox level before the break.

Marc Addy nudged Aycliffe ahead after half-time before Steven Bowen grabbed the visitors’ second equaliser and then Steven Walton put them ahead.

But veteran defender Garry Donald pounced with two headers to restore Aycliffe’s lead – and then striker Wayne Marram made sure of the three points with a fifth in the last five minutes.

Aycliffe manager Steve Moran said: “I thought the game was a credit to the third division. It was an excellent match between two very good sides which turned out to be a good game of football. It was close all the way through until towards the very end, and it was end-to-end stuff, so a good advert for the league.

“I was just pleased to get the win in the end as anything but would have seen us slip too far away from the top two.”

Fox manager Jeffrey Spooner added: “I thought we deserved something from the game. We worked hard and played quite well and I think we probably deserved a point, but it was a good game.”

Elsewhere in Division Three, Masons United and Castle played out a 5-5 draw. Chris Larkman (3), Chris Scaife and Andrew Sedgewick scored for Masons, while Paul Thompson (3), Adam Sullivan and Leigh Lamb were on target for Castle.

EBAC won 6-4 at Horndale Celtic with goals by Mark Owen (2), Anthony Stonehouse (2), Gavin Bell and Craig Ellison. Horndale’s scorers were Graeme Carling (2), Guy Starling and Trevor Dixon.

Scott Hudson and Andrew Steele were both on target for the Southerne Club as they beat the 2, Navy Club 2-1.
