DIVISION One champions Masons Arms ended their season on a top note with a cup victory over gallant losers Tudhoe United.

Lee McRoy put the favourites into an early lead before Paul Leadbitter grabbed an equaliser soon after.

But Lee Newby put Masons 2-1 on the half-hour mark and he added a second after the break to complete Masons’ league-cup double.

“Tudhoe battled hard never gave up, credit to them,” said Masons boss Stuart Savage. “They seemed to enjoy the occasion and fair play to them. There was plenty banter between the sides before and during the game, it was a good match and a good day.”

Tudhoe manager James Curley said: “I was proud of the lads. Masons were just a better team and are experienced finalists. But we didn’t embarrass ourselves, which was a credit not just to the final team but to everyone who has played for us this season.

“We’ve enjoyed a good season, finishing third in the league and reaching a cup final, but it’s something for us to build on – next season the league will be stronger but hopefully we will be as well.”

Masons’ win capped off a successful season for them. Savage added: “It’s been a cracking season – the only disappointment was the League Cup, but we can’t win them all!

“We set out to win the league and we did that so that was great, winning a cup was a big bonus. We’ve been lucky enough to have won two trophies in all the four years we’ve been in the league – eight in total – so we can’t complain with that!”
