Quinns edge latest Masons battle Sunday 8th April 2007
Division One Cup quarter-finals Masons Arms 2 Atkinson, Costello Quinns 3 Hodgson, Parker, Grayson
QUINNS won their latest test with Masons Arms to book themselves a semi-final tie with Thorns.
In the latest of gruelling encounters between arguably the league’s two best teams, Quinns came out on top to clinch this Division One Cup quarter-final clash.
Lee Atkinson had put Masons ahead from the penalty spot, but Chris Hodgson equalised for the visitors – also with a penalty – to level things up at half-time.
Craig Parker and Dean Grayson scored two quick goals for Quinns after the re-start until Mark Costello netted a second for Masons to set up a nailbiting finish.
Quinns boss Keith Brain said: “It was a close first half but I think once we were on level terms we dictated the play and probably ended up the stronger side.
“They pulled one back against the run of play which made for an interesting last 15 minutes or so but luckily we managed to hold on.”
Masons’ Anthony Warnett conceded: “They wanted it more than us, they were first to every second ball and were the better team on the day. But as with most our games with Quinns it wasn’t much of a game, it was very much a battle, that’s just been the nature of them due to the rivalry!”
Quinns face Thorns in their semi-final tie – the winners will play either North Briton or Old Shildon.
