QUINNS will be gunning for cup revenge after they progressed to the second round of the J&A Trophy with a win over Division One rivals Old Shildon.

In a closely-fought game, until Quinns’ dominance later in the second half, the home side booked themselves a second round tie against Division Three side Bishop Masons, who have already knocked Quinns out of the League Cup this season.

Dave Parker scored before half-time to give them a one-goal advantage for the second half, and he added a second along with Craig Parker to complete a good win for Quinns, who are current holders of the trophy.

Goalkeeper Steve Jackson said: “They were the better side in the first 25 minutes and I thought it was going to be a close one, but I think we took over in the second half and played really well.

“It was pleasing to win because it would be nice to hold on to this cup, especially after being knocked out of the League Cup by the Masons, so we’ll certainly be looking to win our second round tie with them!”

Meanwhile, last year’s J&A Trophy runners-up, Masons Arms, won 9-2 at the Southerne Club with goals by Liam McRoy (2), Marc Costello (2), Steven Fothergill (2), Tom Fothergill, John Savage and Sheldon Metcalfe. Lee Marshall and Scott Hudson were on target for the Southerne.

Division Two side Browney also booked their round two place with a 2-1 win over struggling Division One side Thorns, with goals by Andrew Nicholson and John Kidd. Steven Richardson scored for Thorns.

Castle won 6-2 at home to Penny Gill with goals by Paul Thompson (3), Mark Gibbon, Mark Thompson and John Cunningham. John-Paul Howarth and Steven Bunning scored for the Gill.
Bay Horse won 3-2 at home to Green Tree thanks to a Dale Anderson brace and one by Michael Cairns. Matthew Carrick and Barry Liddle scored for the Tree.

Tudhoe United also progressed to the second round stage with a 3-1 win at Shildon Athletic with goals by Paul Leadbitter, Christian Schofield and Allan Barratt. Liam Kavanagh scored Shildon’s goal.

In the second round of the J&A Trophy last week, Half Moon won 3-0 at Croxdale with goals by Michael Fearman, David Hugill and Steven Tulip.

Division Three Aycliffe Village won 6-2 at home to Division One side Hunwick Joiners with goals by Shaun Sproates (2), Wayne Marram, Morgan Fielding, Darren Griffiths and Garry Donald.
